Last night I was watching Saturday Night Live. The weekly guest star sang a song about the joys of fall that included a period free of draining holidays. Fall or Autumn offer so much more. Right now my mobility is limited so my ability to be in the middle of the forest on a weekend does not exist. I have been able to enjoy fall from the roadside. Regardless if I am deep in the woods looking at a beehive that is 4 ft. off the ground or on the roadside with the last of the wild sunflowers, fall is about reflecting on life.
It reminds us that life is cyclical with bright beautiful leaves that were a lucious green in July and then vibrant orange in October to be buried in the snow or the ground covering by December. Bees seek out the last bit of food from flowers, squirrels collect acorns, and deer graze on the last bit of dry grass. All know that winter is to follow with less activity and a change to the routine.
Preparing for the next season |
What does it mean to a human? I am not sure if people stop to smell the leaves on an October afternoon, realize that they just reached for a sweater for warmth, or notice the decline of sunlight for outside activity. Something to ponder in a society that requires us to make time to stop for the simple acts of smelling leaves, savoring a fresh apple, or watching birds migrate.
Have you made time for enjoying fall? I offer this bench as a place to start.
A convenient place for thought |
