This week I traveled to San Francisco. My stay was at a hotel that decorated public spaces with beautiful cymbidium orchids. These plants were extraordinary in size and number of blooms. As I enjoyed one plant, I was reminded of how excited I was last January when I saw buds on one of my orchids. This plant had been a thank you gift from a student who was going to law school. It brightened my kitchen for three months before all the blooms past. Once the blooms had fallen, I placed it in the kitchen window. Periodically, I provided water and fertilizer in hopes of more beauty. And, one of my 2010 New Year’s gifts were buds on the orchid. It bloomed from February until April and then another bud appeared that is in bloom now. Each day, I shower it like a light spring rain and enjoy the vivid color it brings to my kitchen. Did you know?
*Most people start with one orchid on a windowsill. If they have success, they invest in more and even a greenhouse.
*One of the biggest challenges to growing orchids is humidity.
*It is known that orchids have grown in China for over 3000 years and orchids can be found on all continents except Antarctica.Let me share my first success! Is there a greenhouse in my future?
The orchids also produced another idea: Do people look for the familiar when we travel? Does the excitement of new places produce joy as well as fear to the point we identify opportunities to identify the security we have in the place we call home? Think about this the next time you travel.
A blog about nature connecting to life on a daily basis. This connectivity might be intentional or random but it occurs if people create an interest in monitoring it within their life. Topics will include bees, flowers, fruits, vegetables, places, weather, and random topics that appeal to the writer.
