The Desert Tortoise - Creation, Protection, and Longevity
A trip in the southwest desert has potential for many treats and adventures. This weekend we enjoyed the sighting of not one but 5 desert tortoises. It was a hike that started about 10 AM with a temperature of 82 degrees. Within two hours along a 4 mile trail, 5 creatures joined us briefly as they soaked the morning sun. Two maintained their distance in sandy washes, while three others greeted us right on the trail. I have hiked a great deal in the southwest but this was my first opportunity to see these peaceful reptiles in their natural habitat.
Native Americans represent Mother Earth through a tortoise or turtle. Specific attributes are creation, protection, and longevity. This hike was an activity for a wedding weekend for two good friends. These tortoises joining the festivities could be a sign of a spiritual awareness that this union was meant to be now and forever. The tortoises were communicating approval for my friends as they start their life together and encourage them to focus on the attributes of creation, protection, and longevity. Best wishes to Amy and Bill!
